Getting addicted to chocolate HobNobs while in Ireland was a decidedly stupid thing to do, because here, despite being a Commonwealth, there are no HobNobs at the handful of stores where I've looked.  There should be HobNobs everywhere.

(The Canadian distributor claims there are HobNobs to be had at three stores nearby, but they lied.  Lied.)

So I made some from one of the many recipes online.  The one I picked was on a blog by someone married to an ex-pat Brit who tells their spouse their homemade version is better than the real thing, but I think Brit Spouse really loves their not-Brit Spouse, and even if they weren't reassuring their cook of a Spouse while inwardly grimacing at each bite, not-Brit Spouse needs to write better recipe instructions.

Anyhoo.

Homemade HobNobs are not round, as they should be.  Instead, each individual half-TBSP scoopful of batter melded together to make one solid pan-sized block, which, Disaster!  But I looked at it for a long time, decided, Fuck it, and cut it into giant, rectangular squares, smeared freshly-melted chocolate onto their backsides, and ate them in what was not-quite HobNob heaven, but will take the edge off for now.

The hunt for HobNobs continues.

I know how you feel!! being an expat in NZ is too hard, you can find hobnobs and other things in certain shops but they cost a fortune :(

guess what my suitcase is going to be full of after my holidays?!

Allll the hobnobs! And tea, marmite, terrys chocolate oranges, and galaxy chocolate .. may be stretching the luggage allowance here but desperate times!

Perhaps you could try amazon? They keep advertising that they will send food? Whether they'll post abroad I don't know. Anyway I'm in the UK and were running low on marmite and PG tips because of Brexit but we still have plenty of digestives and hobnobs - long live mcvitees !

Amazon is a last resort, because I am stubborn.

Incidentally I saw the shelves packed with marmite here, when I went shopping recently, and had an idle thought that I've never seen that shelf even remotely empty. No one here (that I know of) actually eats it, not even the ex-pat Brit I work with -- he'd rather cut off his own tongue, first, he said, which, yes, please do that and shut the hell up, but that's my inside voice being loud, again, sorry.

But the point was, I know where there's marmite if you're interested in an international HobNob smuggling ring.

If you can find them locally, I'm sure they will be cheaper. But, if you're desperate...

They're all over the Safeways and IGA here in BC and Alberta. Probably Sobeys too, since they own Safeway

No Safeways or IGA or Sobeys where I live, alas, because [insert spooky voice] I live in the middle of nowhere!

(well, not really. Just in a place where the big stores need a lot of convincing to come)

(and apparently, a lot is involved in convincing HobNobs to come here, too)

This is so funny - my American friend who lived here for a year was obssessed with chocolate HobNobs! Everytime I visit her I have to bring some :)

I agree with the idea upthread about having some kind of Marmite/HobNob black market exchange, seems like a sensible solution for all...

Request for printing

I don't know if this is the place to ask this but I didn't know how else to contact you.
I'm fiercly passionate about Loaded March and would like permission to print a copy in a Hard book form for personal use only. Is this okay?

Hi! This is as good a way to contact me as anything. I sure would like to know who you are, though, since you seem to have commented anonymously.

I'm happy to hear that you like Loaded March so much that you want a hardcopy for yourself. I don't have a problem with that as long as you won't be distributing it or profiting from it. If you go with a specialty printer that prints books on demand, really, really, really look at their terms and conditions, because some of them add whatever you upload for printing (even if it's only for personal use) to their catalogue for their own profit, and that's just not cool.

Hi, I cant believe how fast you replied! :)
I commented as anonymous because livejournal is confusing for me and I freaked out. I was on livejournal for 2 months when i got into fandoms before I discovered tumblr 4 years ago. You can find me there at in2fiction
I am in Australia and despite my best internet searches every few months since i had this idea (back in '14) the best thing Ive found is Blurb. (au.blurb.com)
I did a 20 minute read through of their terms and conditions and to my best understanding there were 2 things of note:
1. No compyright allowed. (Duh)
2. If (and only if) I authorise it, they can replicate and distribute it to others. I will NOT be authorising it. This is for me. Because it is amazing. And I've gotten some of my favourite fan art to include (with artist permission). If you like I can email you a copy of the pdf when I'm done.

Thank you SO SO much for permitting this.

Hi! I am surprised that you replied to this so quickly. (Or have I just been stuck into InDesign too long) :)

I didnt comment as anonymous for any nefarious purpose, livejournal just freaks me out. I was on here for two months before I discovered tumblr 5 years ago.
You can find me there as in2fiction

This is the best news. Ive been thinking about this idea every few months for the last 2 years.
Ive only come up with Blurb as the place to make, despite significant research. (Even looking into Thesis printing and binding companies)
After spending half an hour in their black hole of t&cs i found two significant things. 1. No copyright (duh) 2. If i authorise they will replicate and distribute. I WILL NOT authorise. This is just for me.

Im including my favourite fan art as well (with artist permission). Feel free to let me know if you want a copy of the PDF.

Thank you so much!

I had a few minutes! I read everything even though I don't have time to respond and I try to get to questions if I can. And no worries, I didn't think you were being nefarious, I just like to know who people are :)

I looked at Blurb and it looks like a nice place, and, oh, dear, I hope it won't be too expensive to print! Don't spend too much, okay?

If you have permission from the artists that's even better! No need to send me the PDF. As far as I'm concerned, you're the one putting in the work to compile the story for a book format.

Take care and thank you!

So I finished it. It got delivered. The package was a mysterious size but when i opened it and realised what it was I actually fell on my knees and cried. (Though I have been camping all week so exhaustion may have played a part)

Im absolutely stoked, and though it isnt perfect (I found a spelling mistake on my acknowledgements page), it is gorgeous. Thank you so much for permission. If youd like to see the end result, check my tumblr at in2fiction -it will be the second most recent post for the next 16 hours.
