Plagiarism follow-up
Apr. 2nd, 2016 06:43 pmNow that I've had some breathing room to sit down and actually look at the whole plagiarism issue in a bit more depth (thank you to everyone who looked into it, and provided me with examples, and to those who reported to AO3 about its additional similarities to an original fic), I'm actually quite thoroughly baffled.
A random throw-away line in common, sure, I can see that happening. Complete sections, however? Granted, yes, they've been rewritten or re-structured, but honestly? There's too much of it, and clearly lifted from the first two parts of Loaded March, for it to be just a coincidence.
Despite the author's assurance that they've gotten in touch with me with an apology, I have yet to hear from them, so I contacted them first, leaving a comment on their fic. I have also contacted the AO3 abuse team with multiple examples of the plagiarism. We'll see what they say.
I've got to admit, after running through two different comparison checkers, it's clear that a great deal of work was involved in not only coming up with the idea for the fic, but in blending texts from two separate sources, restructuring them, and rewriting them. How is it not just easier to write a brand new fic with someone's own words, using the sources for inspiration? I have a very hard time grasping the concept.
